Be an Angel

We sincerely thank you for your time and attention.

In Zulu spiritual tradition, the angels are called ingolozi. Angels have always been seen as messengers and benefactors, and are held in a special space with regard to the spiritual guides known as the ancestors.  The angels are called on to help out in times of need.

There are different types of angels in Zulu Tradition, too many to list on this page, but all have the common theme of bringing assistance when things seem impossible. Angels are an important part of the African community’s well-being and consciousness.

For the last six years, we have been battling our way towards building a Shamanic Healing Retreat . After running into many obstacles in obtaining the land necessary to build such a space, we finally managed to secure a beautiful piece of tribal land, just over a year ago. For the last year, we have been slowly developing the site towards our dream and vision of creating a safe, nurturing space, where people from around the world can come and experience the African Shamanic (Sangoma) Tradition.

So far, all funding for the project has been sourced directly from our own pockets, from the work that we do as Sangomas, as well as donations from close friends. As it turns out, it will take many, many years to build our vision at this rate.

We recently ran a crowd-funding campaign on a website called Indiegogo. The campaign was a semi-success in that we managed to raise $2946. We are incredibly grateful to those open-hearted beings who have contributed so far. Without you, progress at the Retreat would be at a complete halt. The money raised so far will help us to put up one or two accommodation huts and a communal kitchen. It should hopefully keep the wheels rolling for the next few months. However, once that money has been depleted, we will have to put development on hold until we manage to secure more funding.

Currently, we are looking to raise $54 000 in order to bring our vision of a self sustaining, off-grid, naturally-built African Shamanic Healing Retreat to life, and we need your help.

The healing retreat that we are looking to create is in Hlatikulu, in a beautiful unspoiled, sacred valley on the edge of the Drakensberg Mountains, right next-door to Giant’s Castle.

The funds will firstly go to building accommodation and facilities for students and group work, which is our primary focus. We will also need a space in which to live and teach, and should we achieve all our funding goals then it will provide us with capital to build the main house. This campaign is really needed and really worthwhile, nowhere in Africa is there a dedicated healing retreat that focuses on traditional healing, where teachings can be passed on. Please support our campaign and we hope our unique perks will get you excited and interested! (Perks are listed at the bottom of this page…) Your contribution will help us build a dedicated healing retreat, where members of the local community and people from around the world can receive first class treatment and help to preserve and protect the wisdom and teachings of African traditional healing for generations to come.

In November 2012, we took the first step to realising the dream and purchased a 1.5 hectare site of tribal land in a secluded and stunning valley high up in the Drakensberg Mountains.  Work on the retreat in Hlatikulu has already began, and a large 12 metre Makhosini (ancestor’s sacred space) has already been mostly completed, along with the beginnings of a steaming hut, and construction of the first rondavels for accommodation is under way.  Please see the site plans below, that show the overall vision and layout of the retreat.

Currently we are working from our home in Howick and commute to the site as it is progressing. We have students staying with us who are in the midst of their training. The Thwasa can last anything up to 2 years, and the need for students to have a place where they can live and study in harmony to deepen their connection is of great importance. Thus, one of the primary roles of the healing retreat is to provide a nurturing facility where future generations of Sangoma’s can come, learn and train.

As shamanic healing grows in popularity around the world, more and more individuals of different cultures are being drawn to African Shamanic traditions. The healing retreat will provide a safe and supportive environment, grounded in the integrity of the ancient Sangoma lineage which we work with,  in a stunning setting for people of all backgrounds to come and experience the healing traditions of Africa. We intend to hold a space for groups to visit from South Africa and all around the world.

Thank you, to all of you who are putting energy into contributing to the construction and support of the retreat. It is deeply appreciated and creates a lasting impact that we hope will spread outwards, encouraging the principle of UBUNTU – humanness or human integrity, throughout the world.

We are very conscious of the fact that an exchange of energy is always necessary. It is for this reason that we are offering the following perks for those that choose to help create this healing space (please see the perks we are offering below).

Please remember to send an email to us (makhosi@africashamanexperience.com) to claim your perks, and include the amount donated as well as the postal address to which we can send your perks.
